I wanted to turn the spot light on a “tiny” little subject that seems to be snowballing daily across generations, race, culture and gender … a seven lettered word known as “Anxiety”.

Heard of it or if you are honest enough – experienced it? The thing about anxiety is that it is a normal and common human experience. However when it isn’t managed or dealt with it can grow in epic proportion into disorders, phobias and be incredibly debilitating and limiting.

Late last year I noticed some tell tale signs. We had had several months of extreme stress, and unknowns personally and professionally which began to take its toll. I know enough about it to know that action is required and for me that involved a key ingredient that become my focus and natural medicine:

Exercise is critical and pivotal in the race against anxiety. So instead of my daily beach runs/walks I enrolled myself into boxing for one month as test and trial.

Mamma Mia … the first week I was restricted in hairstyle due to the inability to raise my arms. I am quite competitive by nature and stopping mid box to catch my breath or lend love to my arms was not an option! 45 minute sessions that were beyond any of my own personal sessions which seemed lame in comparison. But I was hooked … it became my space.
The bag reflected all of the fears, worries, and potentially a few conversations that would never take place in real life!!!

Punching was literally connecting me to the actual anxiety and created a space to respond physically to what was happening emotionally and mentally.

Some common experiences of anxiety include:

  • Feelings of panic, fear, and uneasiness
  • Problems sleeping
  • Cold or sweaty hands and/or feet
  • Shortness of breath
  • Heart palpitations
  • An inability to be still and calm
  • Dry mouth
  • Intrusive thoughts

Anxiety is an emotion characterised by feelings that are often based in the future surrounding scenarios outside of our control. Yes, the future. Future events, scenarios, opportunities, what if, but then what – types of situations …

Don’t wait for it to take a hold and rob you of life, sleep and opportunities. Work out what your non negotiable ingredient is and go hard.
